How to wash tights without damaging them?

    Jak prać rajstopy?

Proven methods (laundry net, wash bag, hand washing)

Thanks to current hosiery manufacturing technology and the durable material they are made of, hand washing can safely be replaced by machine washing. However, it's important to know how to wash tights to prevent damage (not only during washing, but also during drying).

There are several ways to ensure tights survive washing without significant damage. Today, I will present my methods for how to wash tights without damaging them.

Lingerie wash bag vs. mesh net – what to choose when washing tights?

In my opinion, a lingerie wash bag is better suited for washing underwear (including women's tights, of course) than a mesh net. Why do I think so? A laundry net has larger or smaller holes and a zipper (depending on the model). It is precisely these holes and the protruding part, which is the zipper, that can snag tights and damage them with other items that have also gone into the wash. A lingerie wash bag is usually made of very thin material and has no perforations, so women's tights washed with its use will become clean, and at the same time will not come into contact with the rest of the laundry, thus minimizing the risk of damage.

The wash bag is also secured with a drawstring, so there are no metal elements that other items could snag on. It is important to wash tights at a relatively low temperature (around 30 degrees Celsius), and also to spin them at low revolutions (an absolute maximum of 600 drum revolutions per minute). This will prevent delicate tights from stretching. It is advisable to use a wool program and a detergent designed for delicate fabrics. It is best if the detergent is in liquid form, especially if you are washing opaque tights, as powder residues can settle between the fibers and cause difficult-to-remove stains.

How to wash tights if you don't have a lingerie wash bag or a laundry net? You can use a pillowcase for this purpose, which will also protect the delicate material of the tights. To maintain the proper shape and elasticity of this garment, drying is also important. Women's tights can easily stretch, so they can be dried flat, between two towels.

Very thin tights – do they need to be hand washed?

Very thin tights can be washed in wash bags, however, tights below 10 den with prints or patterns where a "run" can occur, should be rinsed by hand. For this, use lukewarm water mixed with a liquid wool detergent and gently rub the women's tights in your hands. Pay special attention to the foot part and the panty part. Then rinse the tights of any soap residue and dry them by laying them flat between two towels – just like when washing in a washing machine.

And you? What method do you use for washing tights? Share them with me and other readers in the comments!
