What's better, cotton or polyester socks?

    Białe skarpety

For many years, most of us relied solely on cotton socks. As it turns out, polyester socks are now equally popular. We've prepared a comparison of these two materials, highlighting their characteristics specifically in relation to socks. Find out which is better!

    Are polyester socks good?

Polyester, like any other material, has its pros and cons. It is certainly durable and resistant to damage. And that is most often why we choose clothing or underwear made from it. However, in the case of socks, polyester can do more harm than good.

Polyester socks are not a good solution because it is a synthetic material that does not breathe. As a result, your feet will simply sweat in such socks. This can lead to chafing, and if your feet remain wet for a long time, you may even be at risk of athlete's foot.

To a large extent, however, polyester retains heat. That's why we so often reach for it on colder days. However, it is not a very good choice, as this material overheats the feet.

Check out our comparison of the pros and cons of polyester:

    Polyester socks
    Cons Pros
Low breathability - feet overheat and sweat excessively. High durability.
Roughness - not as soft and pleasant to the touch as natural fabrics. Resistance to washing and chemicals.
    Odor retention. Abrasion resistance.
      Quick drying.
      Low shrinkage.

    Are cotton socks good?

Cotton is a 100% natural material. It is one of the best natural materials, suitable almost all year round. It's no surprise, then, that the textile industry largely focuses on cotton production.

Cotton has many important features that make wearing socks made from it so comfortable. It has very good breathability, making it excellent for warmer seasons. In cotton socks, our feet don't sweat as much, and what's more, it wicks away moisture. This is a good solution for people who suffer from excessive sweating. You can forget about skin overheating, blisters, or chafing that could occur in polyester socks.

However, cotton does have some drawbacks. It can shrink, is not as durable as synthetics, and has less resistance to washing.

Check out our comparison of the pros and cons of cotton:

    Cotton socks
    Cons Pros
Lower wear resistance. Softness - cotton is pleasant to the touch.
Risk of shrinkage in washing. Hypoallergenic - excellent for sensitive skin and allergy sufferers.
Longer drying time. Good ventilation - cotton socks breathe.
Lower thermal insulation. Moisture absorption - cotton absorbs moisture and keeps feet dry.
Tendency to pill. Temperature regulation - cotton is ideal all year round.

Cotton socks are a good solution due to the comfort they provide. With their use, you can certainly avoid excessive foot sweating and allergies. They are suitable for people with sensitive skin, but they do have some drawbacks.

Which is better - cotton or polyester socks?

Polyester socks are most often chosen by athletes. However, this is not a completely good solution that will give you the greatest comfort. Cotton is breathable, soft, and quite durable. By choosing cotton socks, you will certainly avoid sweaty feet and unpleasant odors. In the case of polyester, however, there is a high risk.

Cotton socks are also more ecological, as cotton is a 100% natural fiber.

If you are concerned about their shrinkage or quick wear, choose socks made from a blend of fibers. It's a good idea to opt for socks made from cotton and elastane.
