How to epilate legs and which method to choose?

At-home hair removal step-by-step
At-home hair removal is an indispensable element of almost all women's care routines. It cannot be denied that unwanted hair on the legs bothers many of us (not only does it look unaesthetic when we wear very thin tights, but as it regrows, it causes irritation).
I have sensitive skin, and at the same time, I love the feeling of smooth legs (a razor always saves the day when I want to squeeze into very thin tights before a date). So, I personally chose to shave with a regular razor, which causes the least irritation for me – but you need to know how to shave your legs to actually avoid irritation.
Today, I’ve prepared a short guide for you on at-home hair removal – laser, wax, or a classic razor. Let me know what works for you, and perhaps after reading this text, you’ll want to try a new hair removal method?
Shaving legs with a razor – pros and cons
For almost every woman, the first at-home hair removal was based on the easiest method, a regular razor. It gives an immediate effect of smooth legs, which, however, unfortunately, is not long-lasting – the procedure must be repeated several or a dozen times a month (depending on how quickly the hair regrows). This is the first drawback of this method. The second drawback is the risk of injury (or rather cutting yourself with the blade), and the third is the irritation that shaving legs with a razor causes. Regrowing hairs can unfortunately ingrow into the skin, causing pain and even a condition called folliculitis. How to shave your legs with a razor to avoid these types of problems? I have three proven ways.

- First – opt for exfoliation. It should be performed after every shaving procedure with a razor. What benefits does it bring? It removes dead skin cells, so hairs have no chance of ingrowing into the skin, and it also reduces the risk of folliculitis (in which dead skin cells accumulate along with bacteria).
- The second step, mandatory after shaving your legs and exfoliating, is to moisturize them with a hydrating lotion. This step will make your skin pleasantly smooth, and after exfoliating dead skin cells, it will absorb even more beneficial substances from the applied product. However, it’s worth noting that the lotion you use should not contain paraffin, which can clog skin pores (it’s comedogenic) and hinder its regeneration after the entire procedure.
- The third tip concerns the choice of the razor itself. It should have at least three blades (for effective shaving) and a strip with a moisturizing substance. It is also worth remembering that a dull razor will do more harm than good. It can pull hairs instead of shaving them and leave greater irritation than usual. It makes shaving legs with a razor imprecise, and women’s tights (especially thin ones) can be snagged by remaining hairs.
Sugaring, leg waxing, depilatory cream – what to choose?
When it comes to hair removal using various cosmetic preparations, sugar pastes, wax, and depilatory creams are available on the market. Which one to choose? This, of course, depends on personal preferences, the budget you want to allocate for at-home hair removal, and skin sensitivity.
- If we want to enjoy smooth legs that look good both in a dress and in women’s tights, but we are afraid of pulling out hairs from the roots, we can try a depilatory cream. It is relatively inexpensive, but, unfortunately – it is not very efficient, so we have to repurchase the cosmetic quite often. Depilatory cream dissolves unwanted hairs (manufacturers claim it does so along with the roots), and the product itself is removed from the skin with a special spatula. It usually does not cause irritation – it is gentle on the skin. The only thing is that some hairs remain intact, and at-home hair removal needs to be repeated after about a week. So, it will work for people with very sensitive skin.
- Sugaring is a slightly more complex procedure, although it is also a bit less painful than leg waxing. Sugar paste adheres to the hairs, not to the skin, and therefore does not cause strong irritation. Moreover, sugaring is based on entirely natural ingredients. It can be performed cold or warm (depending on the specific product). The paste is spread on the chosen body part, material or special paper is attached to it, and then it is quickly pulled off. Fans of this type of at-home hair removal appreciate its gentleness, effectiveness, and the natural composition of the preparation.
- A popular method of at-home hair removal is leg waxing. Ready-to-use strips are applied to the skin and pulled off in the opposite direction of hair growth. However, this is the most painful method, as the wax adheres not only to the hairs but also to the skin, which can severely irritate the skin when pulling the strip off the calf or thigh. The effect, however, is long-lasting – leg smoothness lasts up to 4 weeks.
Laser hair removal – if you want long-lasting results
Laser hair removal yields very good results. Currently, devices designed for at-home use can be purchased. While their price is not low, the investment pays off quite quickly, and the hairs disappear for a long time or… forever! However, it is worth remembering that laser hair removal works best for people with a very high color contrast between hair and skin, because laser light destroys melanin – the hair pigment. The more melanin there is, the better the device works. Such at-home hair removal is easy, fast, and pleasant – it should be repeated approximately every 2 weeks, and then every 8 weeks.
