Foot spa – how to make one at home? Part I

Foot exfoliation – my tried and tested methods
In winter, our feet don't have it easy with us. They sweat in shoes, and we can forget about their care for several weeks. The result of such neglect is keratinized skin, calluses, and other unpleasant symptoms. How to care for your feet in winter so that you can confidently slip into open-toed shoes in spring? I have a few ways. Happy reading!
Winter is a time when we can definitely devote ourselves to a foot spa. Long evenings are conducive to this, during which everyone can use a dose of relaxation and rest. And if your partner, husband, or fiancé doesn't mind – you can organize a foot spa together! It's a great escape from problems and a way to forget about the hardships of everyday life for a while and simply... relax, while taking care of your own body. Today, I will convince you that regular foot exfoliation is not time-consuming or expensive at all, and in the next post in the foot spa series, I will tell you what steps to take after removing dead skin.
Foot exfoliation – why is it so important?
In winter, the skin on the feet is more prone to keratinization of the epidermis than in summer. Why is this happening? In warmer months, we are more likely to wear open-toed shoes or take them off completely, so our feet have a chance to "air out," which is beneficial for them. Moreover, in summer, we walk barefoot more often than in winter – on grass or sand on the beach. This acts like a natural peel on the feet, so the skin exfoliates naturally. In winter, however, we often spend several, or even a dozen, hours in the same shoes and socks, often working standing up. All of this contributes to faster keratinization of the epidermis, and as a result – to the formation of calluses.
How to deal with this? Regular foot exfoliation is enough. You can do this in several ways. Each of them corresponds to different preferences (some treatments need to be performed more often, others less often) but each of them, performed regularly (because that is the key to success in foot care) brings very good results.

In summer, walking on the beach provides a natural foot peel. In winter, you also need to take care of it!
Exfoliating foot masks: how do they work?
Use exfoliating foot masks once every few months. They are currently available in many drugstores, so there's no problem buying them. The cosmetic is in the form of a liquid poured into foil or fabric pouches shaped like our feet. The liquid inside most often contains fruit acids, which cause intense shedding of the epidermis. Such exfoliating foot masks are worn for an hour, and after removing them, you wash your feet. Why is it worth performing a foot exfoliation treatment with masks specifically in winter? Because their action is extremely strong. A few days after the treatment, the skin starts to peel off in flakes, and let's face it – it doesn't look very aesthetic. Exfoliating foot masks are therefore an ideal way for autumn and winter treatments. After the exfoliation period, the feet are extremely smooth and well-cared for.
Put on exfoliating foot masks, relax, and in a few days you'll be able to admire your smooth feet!
Mechanical methods of foot exfoliation
Another way to exfoliate feet is mechanical removal of dead skin. This can be done with electric files, manual files, and also with a pumice stone. Unlike exfoliating foot masks, in this case, we see the effect immediately – so this is an option for impatient people. All you need to do is perform such a treatment once or twice a week (regularity is key to foot care), and in spring, you will be able to show off smooth and well-groomed feet. Exfoliating feet in this way is completely safe – you just need to remember to disinfect the device or tool used for the treatment so that no bacteria develop on it. It is also worth being careful with the pressure and adjusting it to your preferences so as not to damage the epidermis and cause irritation, which then heals with difficulty in such a delicate area as the feet.

Pumice stone is one of the most popular foot care tools
Foot scrub – you can make it yourself or buy it at a drugstore
The last way to effectively exfoliate your feet is with a scrub. With this method of removing dead skin, we have two options: we can buy a ready-made product or... make it ourselves! If you want to buy a ready-made cosmetic, I recommend getting a foot scrub that contains urea (which moisturizes and soothes minor irritations) and paraffin (which, although it can be comedogenic – meaning pore-clogging – for facial or body skin, for feet it creates a protective layer that prevents excessive water evaporation from the skin).
If you want to make your own foot scrub, I recommend using a base of your favorite shower gel and enriching it with additives: natural baby oil, an essential oil with your favorite scent, and most importantly – sugar or Himalayan salt. Such a product is best for your skin because you know what's really in it, and additionally, proven products – such as shower gel or essential oil – will not cause irritation during foot exfoliation. Store your homemade foot scrub in a dark, dry place and use it several times a week – if you feel your feet need it.

Himalayan salt is great for homemade foot scrubs
