New Year's Eve in Italy

What are Italian customs like on this special day?
New Year's Eve in Italy is celebrated with great fanfare. Similar to Poland, it involves celebrating with a good dinner, a glass of champagne (in the case of Italians, usually prosecco or spumante), and firework displays. However, in addition to these familiar festivities, Italians also have their own traditions. What are they? I invite you to read on!
Italy is a country where great importance is attached to celebrating special occasions – one of them being New Year's. Italians celebrate it very solemnly, and they also believe that fulfilling all the actions prescribed by tradition will ensure them happiness, prosperity, and wealth in the New Year.
Traditions in Italy – what do they eat on New Year's Eve?
One of the Italian customs on New Year's Eve is eating a specific meal. It consists of lentil stew (small grains symbolize coins, so eating them ensures abundance and prosperity in the coming year) and pork, often served in a very spectacular way, namely... in a pig's trot, complete with a proudly protruding hoof.
In addition to dinner, according to Italian custom, around midnight one should eat 12 grapes – each fruit is supposed to bring good luck for the coming year. Apparently, the best way is to swallow the grapes whole, rather than chewing them – then, according to tradition in Italy, there will be the most luck.

Happy New Year in Italy? Only if you eat lentils on New Year's Eve!
New Year in Italy – throw bad luck out of the apartment!
If you're spending New Year's Eve in Italy, you have to watch out for objects falling from the sky. Or rather, not from the sky, but from balconies. Why is that? Italian custom dictates that the old year should end in such a way that you don't have to return to it in January. Therefore, all matters that began in the previous year must be settled, and all agreements and promises kept. But that's not all! New Year in Italy is welcomed... by throwing old, used, or broken items out of apartments: from toothbrushes, through furniture, to electronics and household appliances. New Year's Eve celebrated this way in Italy aims to get rid of... the bad luck that led to the destruction of the discarded items or devices.

Beware of Italian customs, and avoid balconies on New Year's Eve – Italians throw used items from them!
New Year's Eve in Italy – red underwear is a must!
Italian New Year's Eve cannot do without red underwear – not only under a dress, but also... under trousers! Yes – this Italian custom also applies to men. Before the New Year arrives, Italian shops are filled with red bras, stockings, and briefs and boxers. According to tradition in Italy, red brings good luck – especially in love.

Italian New Year's Eve must be celebrated in red underwear!
